Miami Dade Commissioner arrested for DWI

Miami Dade Commissioner arrested for DWI: On September 19, 2015 Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz was stopped for excessive speed on a motorcycle and subsequently arrested for DWI.  The Miami-Dade Hispanic Police Officers Association came out in support of Diaz. #MiamiDadeCommissionerarrestedforDWI

Miami Dade Commissioner arrested for DWI: The Association cited Commissioner Diaz’ presence at rallies, ceremonies and other events suppported by the Association as the reason for this support.  Diaz is an important member of the commision as he is the swing vote on the 13 member panel.  Diaz is also a valuable supporter of labor.  Indeed, Diaz is so important that the President of the transit union called the arrest a “bump in the road”.   “He made a mistake. Who hasn’t?”  #MiamiDadeCommissionerarrestedforDWI

Miami Dade Commissioner arrested for DWI: Opponents of Diaz have called for the Governor to suspend Diaz and have started a recall campaign.  Apparently Diaz rubbed animal lovers the wrong way by opposing a special tax on the general public to provide for animal services.

Diaz was stopped shortly after 7 p.m. for traveling almost 75 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone in Key West, Florida.  Diaz was riding his Harley and was in Key West to attend the annual Poker Run Motorcycle party.   Diaz foolishly attempted to pass the standardized field sobriety tests which were designed to provide probable cause to arrest, not evidence of actual innocence.  Diaz probably hoped that he would gain favorable treatment in Key West for his favorable treatment of Miami-Dade police.  Diaz quickly introduced himself as “Commissioner Diaz from Miami-Dade County” and later as the “most pro-police guy there is.”  Unfortunately for Diaz the Officer responded, “Pro-police or not, you had no business driving a motorcycle tonight.”

Diaz made the mistake of thinking that his special status would protect him from police scrutiny. Diaz did not realize that his status actually made him a target in Key West. #MiamiDadeCommissionerarrestedforDWI
